Visceral Manipulation

Visceral manipulation is a soft and specific manual approach

to release restricted area at the fascia

around the visceral organs that is significant relationship

to every parts of the body and movement system.

Visceral manipulation has been developed by Jean-Pierre Barral, a Physiotherapist and Osteopath, healthcare practitioners,

who founds Barral Institute.

His manual technique focuses on visceral organs,

their surrounding structure and the possible affects

on body structure and physiological dysfunctions.

The internal organs of your body are referred to as Viscera. Visceral organ includes Liver, Heart,

Lung, Stomach, Gall bladder, Kidney, Uterus, etc.

Our Visceral organs are moving together coherently all the time, such as Liver is moving up and down accordingly to the diaphragm, Small intestine squeezes and moves digested material forwardly. The visceral restriction may come from friction between organs, surgical scar and inflammation within organ, in which, it could affect to the organ’s functions, to surrounding blood and lymphatic flow, and neural tension.

This approach requires

history taking, evaluation and treatment

that can specifically identify

the relationship of the viscera to the musculoskeletal system.

VM encourage Homeostasis throughout the body

including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction

as the fascia of the whole body is connected in one unit.

Removing single or more adhesion reduce pain, dysfunction

and abnormal posture from abnormal point of tension

as a result of long term structural compensation.

Nowadays, VM has been well-known as part of Holistic approach that could help alleviating pain and restore functions.

Many evidences supports VM for the desirable outcomes

for many medical conditions such as

consitpation, post operative scar, gastroesophageal reflux disease, musculoskeletal pain, diastasic recti, infertility, etc.
